Youth Convergence 2022

In celebration of International Youth Day, on August 11, 2022, Zamboanga-Basilan Integrated Development Alliance Inc. (ZABIDA) held this year’s “Youth Convergence program with the theme: Intergenerational Solidarity: Creating a World for all Ages” at the Grand Astoria Hotel, which was participated by Youth representatives from partner barangays composed of IP Youth, In-School Youth, Out of school Youth and Community leaders.

The highlights of the event are to address the issues and concerns of the youth and to promote their rights in Politics/Governance, Peace and Security, Environment, Education and Employment.

The morning activity started with the presentation of the Youth Rights which was referenced in identifying the youth’s priority issues and rights in consultation with the
participants. Shortly after,an art session on the Promotion of Youth Rights followed. The participants who were grouped into their respective communities each painted their representation of what their priority rights are. Mr. Moncini Hinay, Co-Founder of KIDS WHO FARM gave a brief orientatoion on Hydroponics and how it can be an environmental agenda for the youth. He explained the future of food security depends on the participation of young people in food and agriculture.

In the afternoon, a simultaneous review of The SK Reform Law was facilitated to the grouped participants. Each group was tasked to understand and analyze whether the SK Reform Law addresses their priority issues. Following the discussion of the SK Reform Law, each group began to share their thoughts and suggestions regarding the law. Their concerns were clarified and consolidated which will be made into their Youth Statement by Atty. Bensaud Degusman, a Commission on Human Rights Lawyer.

As a concluding activity, Mr. Robert Basco asked the participants what are the challenges on the new normal that affects the youth on the ff: Environment, Political, Peace and Security, Education, & Employment. Each participant answered with their contribution as youth to these issues.

IEC materials listing the different Youth Rights in Chavacano dialect were distributed to each group of participants for them to display in their respective Barangay Halls or Organization office.

This activity was achieved through the support of AECID and Manos Unidas under the Convenio 3 project.

Since 2019, ZABIDA recognizes the Youth as one of its priority sectors in the Convenio program supported by AECID and Manos Unidas. Working together with the Sangguniang Kabataan, Youth Representatives and Youth-serving organizations in implementing civic-engagement projects focused on environment, livelihood, health: mental, reproductive & substance abuse, sports development, and other projects responding to youth issues and needs in Zamboanga City and Basilan.
